little pink houses for you and me....

So not to be post-post modern about this, I think one of the requirements of my vertical housing development is for the individual to feel a tangible sense of ownership of their home; it must be identifiable from the outside. In my vertical development I am shamelessly inserting the iconographic image of the traditional gable-roofed home. Ridiculous? Maybe. Ridiculous not to do this? Yes. The point must be expressed though.

In other developments I have been exploring tensegrity structure because it may be installed very quickly and the parts can be made on an assembly line. Areas on the ground surrounding the construction are also relatively undisturbed; particularly important in Detroit not for people or business (there really isn't much to be disturbed) but roadways. If you close a road in Detroit it's big business; if you tear down a home it's no big deal aparently. Viewing a tensile structure in the way that I am has the downfall of being difficult to work with in terms of obstructions from the structure itself, but space here really isn't an issue; the structure is inexpensive and so is the real estate.

creating a campus

so these are my sketchyness sketches that i am working with. the campus that is being conceived is thought out in my head, but the frustration is coming when trying to put it into reality. duh. the top image shows the building diagrams i am kind of working with. i had originally thought to house 98 people, which is 3/4 of the 130 people i am going to train at one time. because of spatial issues, concept issues, and an general reasoning that i do not need to house this many people...based on the fact that not all the jobless people are going to be homeless, and if not homeless, why would they want to leave their home just to be in a training program? thus...the housing units are fewer, small, roommate style apartments, but maintain a sense of property, keeping in mind those that might be coming in from off the streets. the diagrams talk about how many people would be housed in each building and what other program it holds.

some pics:

Asher, the silos are 20' in dia. inside w/ 8" thk. walls - all SIX of them (what's this I hear about you only building four?)

Brian, farmer Barry is our neighbor on Pierce (btw Dubois and Chene), he has farmed these three lots since 1970.

Thomas, meet 'Slim', burning insulation off electrical lines. he claims he'll get about $100 for what you see in the fire.

MAY 23rd, reenactment?

Epoxy resin systems are mixtures made up of varying amounts of several components. The main components of epoxy resin systems are the epoxy resin and the curing agent (also known as hardener). In addition, other components of the epoxy resin system may include solvents, reactive diluents and fillers. In general, epoxy resin systems have hazardous properties, but can be handled safely. The hazards associated with the specific epoxy resin system being handled will depend on the hazardous properties of the components. The following sections describe potential hazards associated with the various components of epoxy resin systems.

EPOXY RESINS

Epoxy resins are a family of synthetic resins including products that range from liquids to solids. The most common resins are produced by reacting epichlorohydrin with bisphenol A or bisphenol F. The three general classes of epoxy resins are liquid, solid and modified liquid.

General Classes

Liquid resins are mild to moderate irritants to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. The irritant potential is increased by their "sticky" nature, which tends to lead to prolonged skin contact. These resins are generally mild to moderate dermal (skin) sensitizers in susceptible individuals.

Solid resins are not readily absorbed through the skin and present a low risk of skin irritation. Direct contact with solutions of these resins can cause mild to moderate irritation of the skin and the eyes, principally because the solvents "de-fat" the skin. When crushed to a fine powder, the materials should be considered an irritant dust; inhalation and skin contact should be avoided. Solid resins are generally low to mild sensitizers.

Modified liquid resins are resins modified by the addition of reactive diluents (see page 3) or solvents (see page 2). Both chemicals and water are used as solvents. When water is used, the resins are referred to as "waterborne resins." These resins should be handled with the same precautions as those in chemical solvents. They are mild to moderate skin irritants. These low molecular weight resins and the reactive diluents are moderate to strong sensitizers. Their sensitizing potential tends to increase with decreasing molecular weight. Epoxy components with significant volatility could cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, but inhalation is normally not a hazard except under certain conditions of use, i.e., heating, spraying, or applications with large surface areas. Certain modified resins, such as cycloaliphatic epoxy resins have been shown to cause skin cancer in laboratory animals.

weight loss and faith

http://www.wdworkshop.com/home.asp
http://www.rickross.com/reference/weighdown/weighdown2.html

believe it or not, there is already a cult following for a religious based weight loss program named 'The Weight Down Workshop and Remnant Fellowship- the pioneer of faith based weight loss", a new sect created by Gwen Shamblin in the early 90s. the biblical based diet is all about seminars and merchanises (check them out on the website posted), and the followers will leave the program with a new lifestyle and new religion. btw, Shamblin is from Tennessee...(um, miller?!)

the program feeds on guilt. shit, just like my developing cult. it uses biblical texts to support its doctrines.

Shamblin equates overeating with sin, writing 'people are lusting after it and longing for it and are basically in bed with it.' how can my religion compete with this? actually, i am really glad that such a ridiculous thing exists..I have yet another precedent to look at!

guggenheim Detroit???

can detroit be the next big architourist destination? i've been making some collages to get that architourist-y feel in the downtown site. As for program, research has shown that museums are the top usage of these spaces. Because of detroit's historical context and the site's surrounding of transportation, it feels fitting that a museum to the automobile be the new symbolic building there. more collages to be made to test types of iconic architectural details that have made popular architourist places, well, popular! and sketches of museum plans and concepts....

why is everything related to sex?

creating a Fellowship that could virtually exist anywhere. what the hell? i am continuing this siteless but concept-full project with surrealist cowhead imageries, addictions, and creepy religious contexts.

The idea of consumption is brought through in the project's emphasis on the human desire + sin + temptation. So to create a 'dreamscape' that transcends our idealist/puritan perceptions in reality, I will continue with my original craving booth idea that overwhelms our senses. I guess the most important thing for my installation is to 'make blood without blood'. To disturb in the most subtlest way possible...and that is why I think I can't just create an installation.

Perhaps I have to create a ritual instead, or a ceremony, or a new world that no one has seen before. To simply create a location for the 'people' is not enough; it's more interesting to create the 'location' with the masses. A Fellowship can exist anywhere you want -> as long as junk need exists, someone will service it. I have been re-reading William burrough's Naked Lunch. it is quite disturbing.

more to come!!

syncretism

Symbiosis
The living together in permanent or prolonged close association of members of usually two different species, with beneficial or deleterious consequences for at least one of the parties.

Parasitism
one member of the association benefits while the other is harmed (+ -)

An excess of homes and homeless coexist in Detroit, both abandon due to lack of infrastructure. Through a parasitic relationship between the established and desolate, a structure will be constructed to provide the unfortunate populace access to the basic needs for homeostasis.

A parasite can cling to its host for life support. With the introduction of an indescript device, the poor can begin to deplete the utilities once available only to the rich. By reprogramming typical urban apparatus into homeless shelters, the parasitic infestation can creep into the city incognito, tapping into needed supplies via office, commercial, industrial, and institutional.

Who? Recently homeless families
What? Urban camouflaged devices
Where? Parking lots, alleys, rooftops
Why? As temporary shelter to re-establish oneself

amnesiac

I spent a good deal of time finishing these sections; detail-oriented with an understanding of construction to destruction. I found the process helpful in understanding what architecture goes through while living in this city. Though the drawing didn't answer the most intriguing questions from my review:
LW: Who's going to construct this?
TG: Who's this being built for?
MH: Where's all the dirt go?
Some suggestions were made towards specificity, context and progress. I find myself thinking at a larger scale for the second intervention in the PTD city. Numbness. I imagine its relation to circulation. The systems of movement through a city. I think that public transportation is a good place to start. I am particularly interested in the moment when GM bought out the street cars and replaced them with buses. It seems like the melding of economic and political interest an our industrial landscape made no one accountable for its dissertion.
I keep coming back to the same question: Can you re-shape the city without construction?

House that Does Not exist, YET!

With the heavy, touchy-feeling issue that my site is dealing with, each of the five houses will explored and express the different issues of the Detroit Incinerator. Not only environmental issue that the Incinerator caused but as well as social and political issue.

House that doesn’t breathe: This house will deal with the problem of air pollution that caused by the Detroit Incinerator. From the literal point of view the first reaction from the site is that, the only way that anyone can live there is that ‘people should just not breathe’. The House that doesn’t breathe will act as a filter between inside and outside.

House that lies to its occupant: The idea started with the criticism on the Detroit Government.

House that doesn’t make sense: It’s a reaction on my take of the situation with the Incinerator.

House that goes in a vicious cycle: The whole process of the enclosed loop of paying more to get trash burned in the incinerator, and back to causing health and environmental problem.

The question is that what can I do with my design in order to have a quiet protest towards the situation? So… I am thinking that the project has to combine everything together, criticizing, mocking, however has to be poetic and powerful at the same time marketable? I’m focusing on one house right now, thinking to myself - how can I do five designs?

I guess the first step is the hardest. I’m still searching different way to generate my design. Any suggestions - Help would be wonderful!!
The above is something I did freshman year, “combination of trash and metal”. In spite the ‘trash’ element, surprisingly, it is also a quiet protest in its own rights, well, my inner angst too I suppose.

Modeling...

12 models so far for the retail program, trying different ideas, some are rather big boxish, some are retail rethought and some are downright Gehry...

Anyhow more on the way

My Materials and Components

Concrete:
79,970 tons of slab per tower
269 tons of column per tower
x 4 towers
Total weight of concrete: 300,955 TONS OF CONCRETE

Brick:
322,776 bricks per tower
484 tons of brick per tower
x 4 towers
Total # of bricks: 1,291,104
Total weight in bricks: 1937 tons

Toilets:
1 toiler per Unit
x 448 Units
Total Toilets: 448

Doors:
4 doors per Unit
x 448 Units
Total Doors: 1792 doors

So you get the idea. This continues on to include: Drywall, Electrical Materials: including wiring, Plumbing Materials: including p traps, brass fittings, Doorknobs, Refrigerators, Stoves, Sinks, Outlet Covers.
If you can think of any others besides these let me know.
So obviously some of these are more precise then others, and I have been debating with this. I can only assume how many outlets there may be on each wall of a 18' x 25' apartment. I also, can only assume on the availability of these materials, ie. doors may be gone, stoves, moved, etc. I have been thinking about a way to percentage this down, but I am not going to go there yet.
Anyway, all this information is being organized on a taxonomy drawing. That at this stage seems to be a digital thing. I haven't yet finished designing it, but let's say that I am taking some cues from Integrated Building Systems and trying to make it a clear yet not too dumb a diagram.
Other then this data crunching, I have been doing some sketches of entry spaces and transition zones. I don't know if I'll be able to scan those in by midnight.
Also, my site plan is developing into part new architecture, part construction process. I see this as being a main point of critique for Tuesday. The arrangement of these parts in relation to the construction of the new design as well as what that new design is!
Thanks and I feel like an accountant.

italianized detroit

so thomas and i agreed that my crit was a bit confusing. we spoke about many new directions to take. i'm looking into the Nolli map of ancient Rome which is jam packed with detailed information about the ancient city. it shows everything from figure ground to topography to ancient monuments and semi-public spaces and even plans of these spaces and buildings. as a way to provoke thought, i am designing my own Nolli Detroit. it's going well, shown above is firstly an extension of the site to cover aspects i want included in my complex map. building plans are now being researched and i have assigned symbols and tools to conveying information specific to detroit. i discovered that ancient rome was created in a "carving out" strategy. the entire map appears to have been one giant mass, with the open spaces and streets simply carved out of the mass. detroit, on the other hand, is completely opposite, as most modern cities seem to be today. buildings are placed one after another, not touching, which is contrary to rome, and open space seems to swallow the whole city. thinking about this made me realize maybe more open space is not in detroit's best interests...as the next idea below talks about...
also...one semi-serious, semi-ridiculous, semi-radical idea is that of turning the entire site into a giant piazza. the picture and collage shown above. the piazza would run flush to the buildings not allowing roads to pass through, solely pedestrian-friendly, something detroit knows nothing about. roads would be blocked, the entire area covered over in cobblestone (!?). an outdoor theater would be maintained and other designated spaces for designated program would be evident.
more to come.

le Modular

I'm coming from two opposite directions at the same time: top-down, and ground-up. And I'll meet myself somewhere in between.

Top-Down

(See Attached Illustration)

Mapping Metro-Detroit to illustrate process of condensation into a city core. - Edge buildings are eaten, digested, and taken to the people mover, now a mobilizer providing valuable construction material for the new settlements.

Ground-Up

(See other Attached Illustration)

Experimenting with different modules used to provide minimal infastructure for residents of settlments.

hay house

researching urban agriculture I came across an article discussing the storage of hay within a number of homes throughout the city. I was very interested in the shift in program and how in a certain sense it referenced the "urban camouflage" that matt and I had spoke about earlier. Its new program, storage, results from a basic availability and meets the needs of whatever is being stored, in this case the necessity of keeping the hay dry. With new objects come new configurations and also tools. I am also exploring the possibility for an architecture that could precipitate new growth such as a structure consisting of garden hoses. such a project could situate itself somewhere in between the suburban and agrarian.

last call

Thursday afternoon I had an opportunity to spend a few hours at the Detroit Public Library. I was able to make photocopies of a rather comprehensive map of the city assembled in 1991-this was the most recent study I found. I was able to make copies of the Dequindre Cut (from above the market down to the river) as well as a good section of the brewster project. I will be going back down to the city tomorrow and wanted to know if there was any information that people "need" me to collect. anyways, let me know if there is.

p.s.

matt and thomas, i hope that your seminar at MOCAD went well. I am sorry that i could not see it but I had to pick my mom up from work at 7:45. see you back in providence.

Return from Ashes

Michigan Central Station - Main Waiting Room
6:45 am EST March 26, 2007

This was roughly processed (very rough, minding the jpeg artifacts and compressed dynamic range) and stitched from lowered-resolution jpegs. More to come later: I'm working on some 96 megapixel stitched monsters which will be available on a dvd for the class to share.
